Introduction

BHEL, Hyderabad is India's major supplier of power station pumps for various applications like boiler Feed Booster, Condensate Extraction and circulating water. These feed pumps are manufactured in collaboration with M/s Sigma Lutin, Czechoslovakia and weir pumps Limited, U.K.

In order to ensure the continued satisfaction of customers regarding the performance of BHEL pumps, full fledged prototype testing facilities have been installed at BHEL , Hyderabad. The pump testing facilities of BHEL, Hyderabad are unique in the country and are comparable to that of any world class test station. The tests cover full range of operations on all prototypes.

TESTS CONDUCTED

The following tests, conforming to international standards are generally conducted at the works.

ROUTINE TESTS ON ALL PUMPS

These tests are conducted on each and every pump.

a) Balancing quality check for rotating parts.

b) Mechanical performance test on prototype pumps to check temperature rise and housing vibrations of bearings and external leakages from stationary and rotating seal faces.

c) Hydraulic performance test to cover complete range of operations on prototype pumps to check:
Flow Vs Head characteristic
Flow Vs Power characteristic
Flow Vs Efficiency characteristic.

TYPE TESTS AS OPTIONAL
These tests are conducted only when specially agreed upon.
a) NPSH test for 1% and 3% Head break down.
SPECIAL TESTS ON BOILER FEED PUMPS
a) Hot water performance test.
b) Combined string test.
c) Axial thrust measurements.
d) Pressure pulsation tests.
e) Dry run test.
f) Thermal shock test.
g) Visual Cavitation test ( at BHOPAL).
TESTING FACILITIES
  • DYNAMIC BALANCING FACILITY UP TO JOB WEIGHT OF 4000KGs.
  • FACILITY FOR TESTING OF BFPs UPTO 1500 m3 / hr FLOW & 220 bar Discharge pressure.
  • FACILITY FOR TESTING OF BOOSTER PUMPS UPTO 1500m3 / hr FLOW AND 25 bar DISCAHRGE PRESSURE.
  • FACILITY FOR TESTINGOF CEPs UPTO 1500 m3 /hr FLOW & 40 bar Discharge pressure.
  • FACILITY FOR TESTING OF CWPs UPTO 33000m3 / hr FLOW & 7 bar DISCHARGE PRESSURE.
  • ELECTRICAL DRIVE FACILITIES UPTO 10000 kw ON 11kv, UPTO 3500 kw ON 6.6 kv, upto 1100 KW ON3.3 KV & UPTO 400 KW ON 415 VOLTS SUPPLY.
  • CLOSED LOOP HOT WATER TEST FACILITY AND THERMAL SHOCK TEST FACILITY.
  • FACILITY FOR NPSH TESTING OF FIRST STAGE IMPELLER FOR CEP UPTO 1500 m3/hr FLOW AT SPECIFIED TEMPERATURE
  • DATA ACQUISITION SYSTEM AND STATE OF THE ART INSTRUMENTATION FOR AUTOMATED TESTING OPERATIONS.
INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS FOR POWER STATION PUMPS

Various International Standards are in vogue for the guidance of a pump manufacturer to conduct the routine as well as type tests.Prominent Test standards are:

  • APT - 610, 8th Edition - 1995
  • ANSI - HI 1.6 ( 1994)
  • BS - 5316 PART - 1 (ALSO ISO -2548)
  • BS - 5316 PART -2 (ALSO ISO -3555)
